Transport and Store Your Wedding Dress Safely

Transport and Store Your Wedding Dress Safely Before Your Wedding Day (Part 1)

When you say “yes” to the dress with us at Midnight Elegance you’ve got an exciting 6-9 month wait for production and delivery of your dress from your chosen designer. But what do you do once you receive your dress from us? How do you transport and store your wedding dress safely?

Here are our top tips to transport and store your wedding dress safely before your special day:

1) Transportation

We suggest you lay the gown down along the length of the back seat of your car. Think carefully about who comes with you to collect your gown from our boutique as they won’t be travelling home in the backseat!

2) Pack it away

Keep it packed away unless you’re taking it to be altered – no peeking! Talking of packing, a breathable bag or specially designed pH neutral carbon box is best – some materials can cause condensation and even mould so are best avoided. Your dress will leave our boutique in a breathable fabric dress bag.  Our garment bags are designed for transporting wedding dresses so they are suitable for very short-term periods of storage and offer some protection. It enables you to travel with your dress to and from the seamstress and also to your wedding venue while keeping it covered so it won’t get dirty.

3) Storage

Store it in a well-ventilated room, out of direct sunlight – your spare room (but read points 5 and 6 below!) or at your MOH’s place might be good options.

A clean, dry wardrobe, or similar safe place is the best place to keep it.  Sunlight and moist air are a delicate fabric’s worst enemy, so make sure your wedding dress is protected. Wrapping your dress in a freshly washed, neutral colour fast duvet cover/sheet, clean unbleached muslin or the fabric garment bag we provided you with, is suitable for protecting your dress for short periods of time. It is important you keep your wedding dress separate from other items as dyes from textiles/clothing may affect the pure material of your wedding dress.

4) Hanging

Be sure that you hang your bridal dress by the ribbon hanging loops that are attached on the inside of the dress – we suggest you double wrap these loops. This will prevent the dress from pulling or stretching on the hanger. It will also help prevent any damage to embellished shoulder straps or sheer illusion straps.

5) Pet free zone

Resist the temptation to constantly check on your dress or show it off to guests. Most brides want it to be a surprise on their wedding day after all!

And that includes letting Daisy your cocker spaniel have a sneak peek. Pet hair and pet claws do not mix at all well with silk, crepe or tulle and certainly not with luxurious lace.

6) And, just as a reminder, keep it out of your fiancé’s reach, too!

While some brides do invite their fiancé to their wedding dress shopping appointment (you want the advice of someone that knows you best after all), it MIGHT spoil the magic for you both if your fiancé sees your dress before the big day while it’s hanging in your spare room.
